There are several variety of moss in Alaska. Tortula muralis is commonly found in rocky areas or forests. Moss absorb water through their leaves rather than through a root system. The leaves are small and the moss grow in clusters.

Moss produce tiny seed pods called sporophytes. Close up of the sporophytes can be seen in the pictures above and to the right.
