Bohemian Waxwing Description

There are 3 species of Waxwings:
      - Japanese Waxwing
      - Cedar Waxwing
      - Bohemian Waxwing

The Bohemian Waxwing is the largest of the 3, with an average adult size of 20 cm (8 inches), and a wingspan of approximately 30 cm (12 inches).

Its plumage is grey, with white, yellow, red and black color scheme near the tip of the wings. Males and females are very similar in appearance.

By contrast, the Cedar Waxwing has a slightly darker plumage, and does not have the white, yellow and black patterns on the wings.

Bohemian Waxwing Habitat

While the Cedar Waxwings are commonly found in the continental United States, the Bohemian Waxwings can be found in the subarctic latitudes of Alaska, Europe and Asia. The Japanese Waxwing is exclusively found in Asia.

Bohemian Waxwings don't follow a defined migration pattern like Swans or Arctic Terns. The flocks roam the edges of northern forests, and their movement highly depends on food availability.

Waxwing Diet

The Waxwings eat insects but they primarily feed on berries and fruits. There were still a few fruits available for the picking this time of year in Alaska (February).

They are quite playful with their food. One is seen here juggling with a red fruit, which makes for an interesting birdwatching experience...

Waxwings are very social, and often remain in relatively large flocks.

They breed in the summer, usually producing two broods of 4 to 6 eggs.

The chicks leave the nest only 2 weeks after hatching.
