Tom Thurston was not able to complete this year's Iditarod and had to give up his bid to cross the finish line in Nome. He made the decision to abandon the race in Unalakleet. He only had 8 dogs left on his team.

Musher Tom Thurston is from Colorado. Tom arrived in Nome on March 19th in 41st place. He completed the 1100 mile race in roughly 12 days and 17 hours.

Tom is relatively new to the Iditarod, having participated in only 2 of the races. For his debut in 2009, Tom Thurston finished in 44th place. Iditarod XXXVIII, however, did not end up as he had expected: Tom had to drop out of the race near the checkpoint of Ophir with 11 dogs remaining on his team.
